Our History

Spanopoulos Group - About us - Our History / Old photograph from the early years of Spanopoulos shipyards

We evolve through progress, agility and a constant drive to exceed expectations in every project we undertake.

Our Journey - Navigated by Agility | Defined by Expertise

Founded on ambition and a keen eye for opportunity by Captain Christos and Aggela Spanopoulos, our group has evolved into a leader in the marine and construction industries.

Our heritage is anchored in the hull of “Vosporos,” the workboat Captain Christos first operated in 1962, a boat that ignited the drive for a much larger vision.

By 1977, that vision took shape with the launch of the first tugboat, “Christos,” followed shortly by our first floating crane in 1980. These early milestones laid the foundation for a legacy of pioneering integration for more than 50 years.

Over time, Ignatios and Michalis Spanopoulos followed in their father's footsteps, carrying forward the vision and leading the group to a new era of strategic growth.  Under their leadership, the group experienced significant growth, operating across three core sectors: Marine Engineering & Construction, Towage & Salvage and Shipyard Services.

Our Towage & Salvage operations marked the inception of the Group’s journey, evolving from a single vessel into one of the most versatile and capable fleets in the region. Initially concentrated on domestic waters and the towage of floating structures within Greek ports, the Group steadily enhanced its operational capacity and technical expertise. The 2010s saw exponential growth, with the fleet more than doubling as we expanded into international waters, undertook high-profile operations, and strengthened our capabilities in deep-sea towage, wreck removal, and dead ship handling.

Today, operating over 75 tugboats and continuously upgrading our assets, we support harbor and ocean towage, offshore support, salvage and emergency response, antipollution and diving operations, delivering sustainable, safety-first services designed to meet the demands of a dynamic global market.

Marine Engineering & Constructions

The marine engineering and construction sector has been a key pillar of our growth since the 1980s, when the Group first entered the field of marine infrastructure. By the 2010s, strategic diversification positioned us to deliver complex, multidisciplinary projects — from major port developments across the Mediterranean and the Red Sea to vital oil and gas infrastructure in North Africa.

Today, our strength lies in the combination of scale, flexibility, and deep technical know-how. Backed by a highly specialized team, we have built a solid track record in delivering a wide range of marine works, including ports and harbors, jetties, offshore structures, marinas, dredging operations, subsea installations, and navigational systems.

Shipyard Services

Anticipating market demand for agile, end-to-end solutions, the Group strategically expanded into shipbuilding with the acquisition of its first facility in the late 1990s, which later became our first fully operational shipyard in Piraeus by 2006. In 2014, the Group further strengthened its presence with a second facility, primarily dedicated to providing specialized services to yachting vessels.

Today, these shipyard facilities span over 150,000 sq.m., including 15,000 sq.m of covered infrastructure. Through our three floating docks we have the capacity to accommodate vessels up to 230 meters in length, our shipyards deliver fully integrated services, from routine maintenance to complete refit, supported by highly skilled teams, advanced infrastructure and a strong commitment to safety, progress and collaboration.

Built for collaboration and designed for growth

In line with our commitment to our people, in 2025 we established our state-of-the-art headquarters. Located in Athens, this space spans over 4,000 sq. m., demonstrating our ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure and most importantly supporting our people. Driven by a forward-looking strategy, the group continues to strengthen each sector by investing in infrastructure, technology, and capabilities to meet rising global demand and execute increasingly complex projects with precision and efficiency.
